Lagos-based producer 21J is stepping into new territory with his latest drop, Shayo a record that didn’t quite go as planned, but turned out even better.
Sharing how the track came together, 21J says: “This beat came during the early sessions for my EP Not Too Late. I wanted something light, feel-good, and dance-ready. Out of curiosity, I sent it to Waaybad, just to hear what he would add. Instead of tweaks, he came back with full lyrics and vocals and that gave the track a whole new life.”
That “new life” is what makes Shayo special. Waaybad, usually known as a producer, fully steps into the role of artist here — dropping sweet but cheeky lines like “Anything you want, I’ll buy for two” before flipping into chants of “Shayo! Gbe mi trabaye!”. The result is a song that blends romance with party energy, sitting perfectly on 21J’s groove-heavy production.
First listeners have even said Waaybad’s delivery carries the same youthful spark as Rema — a comparison that immediately makes ears perk up. For Waaybad, this marks his debut as an artist; for 21J, it’s another step in carving his lane with soundtracks that reflect the heart and heat of Lagos while speaking to a global audience.
