In just under two years, Ghanaian singer-songwriter KJ. has amassed a worldwide following with the
beginning of his solo career in 2021 with the release of his debut Ep., “People’s Man,” an amalgamation of his
experiences with love and loss which spoke to his audience as he stylistically and expertly weaved a tale of
romantic involvement, infidelity, waning interest and eventual breakup of a relationship. He continued to
show his passion for his craft through the release of his sophomore Ep. “Havana after Dark,” a cultural
melting pot that details his struggle with feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem and depression as
someone torn between two paths.
His loyal, and growing, fan base can be attributed to his authenticity and his rawness as he uses his music to
address topics that represent a shared human experience, topics which he continues to reference in his
upcoming single, “Head Above Water”.
The creative choices for this single showcase the effect of depression and desperation on the human psyche
through the strategic use of dark blues with black undertones in the cover art. The focus of the cover art
being a person floating in an all-encompassing body of water, bends to the audience’s own creative
interpretation. With its dark tones it lends itself to feelings of sadness, being overwhelmed and equally
hopeless yet the position of the individual in the art brings about feelings of hope and above all perseverance,
emotions which truly embody the creative drive behind “Head Above Water”.
Produced and sound engineered by Sei, “Head Above Water,” secures KJ.’s position as not only an artist that
can reflect on his experiences but also reproduce them connecting with his audience in a way that truly
astounding.
